What is Tretinoin used for?

Tretinoincapsuleis used for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukaemia.

Tretinoincream/gelis used for the treatment of acne, fine lines, wrinkles and other skin diseases.

Tretinoin may also be prescribed for other conditions as determined by the doctor.

How does Tretinoin work?

Tretinoin belongs to the class of drugs called retinoids. Tretinoincapsuleworks by promoting the growth and maturation of blood cells in the bone marrow. Thus, it helps in reducing the symptoms of the condition.

Tretinoincream/gelworks by decreasing the adherence of follicular epithelial cells, which decreases the formation of blackheads. It also stimulates the mitotic activity, which helps in the growth of follicular epithelial cells. Thus, it causes extrusion of the blackheads.     

How to use Tretinoin?

The dosage and the drug form depend on the age, weight and medical condition of an individual.

  • Swallow the capsule whole. Do not crush or chew the capsule. Take Tretinoin with or without food.
  • Apply a thin layer of cream/gel on the affected area and rub it gently.

If you miss a dose of Tretinoin, please use it once you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not use a double dose to make up for the missed dose.

The overdose symptoms of Tretinointopicalmay include:

  • Excessive redness
  • Peeling of the skin
  • Discomfort
